Nike Design Combine

Nike Design Combine. A 3D sneaker configurator that shoots its own campaign.

#iPadOS#3D#GenerativeAI

For SneakerWeek’s Nike Design Combine competition, I built an iPad app that puts a fully rendered Air Jordan 1 in a designer’s hands, then turns their colorway into product photography.

Problem

A colorway on a screen is just a sketch.

Designers needed to see their idea as a finished product, not just a 3D model, before a single sample was cut.

Solution

Spin it, tap any part, make it yours.

19 editable parts

From collar lining to sole stitching, every part can be recolored on its own.

5 material finishes

Leather, suede, patent leather, rubber and foil.

360° real-time rendering

Rotate, zoom and inspect every panel.

Submit from the app

Save and compare colorways, then enter the best one.

Impact

Pre-sample

Designers saw their idea as a finished product before a sample was cut.

19

Editable parts of the Air Jordan 1, each with its own color and one of 5 finishes.

Lessons

01

Real-time 3D on iPad needs a budget.

Lessons from the Farcast cockpit carried over: GPU load, memory and heat set the ceiling. Material changes and camera moves were tuned so the model stays smooth while a designer works through all 19 parts.

02

Show the shoe the way it will be sold.

A configurator ends when the design is done; a campaign starts when it looks real. Rendering the finished colorway on foot, in studio and on the shelf let designers judge their idea as a product, not a model.
